DIY HALLOWEEN DOORMAT
Today I’m excited to be sharing one of my favorite projects this year. And guess where the supplies came from?
Gasp! The Dollar Store! If you know me, that piece of information is not surprising at all.
About a month ago, I was perusing the aisles as I normally do and happened upon some plain old door mats in the home/auto section of the store. They had green, black, blue…For only a $1, I knew I could whip up something fun with them. So, I bought myself a black one and went home to get the creative juices flowing.
Spray paint in your color of choice (I used Krylon 2 in 1 paints)
Newspaper and Painter’s Tape
Foam Brush or Paint Brush
I decided to give spray paint a try on the mat and see if I could create a fun little Halloween door mat to greet our visitors. Here’s how I did it.
There were actually two different types of door mats at the Dollar Store. One was thinner and coarser, and the other was a little more plush. I chose to use the second one because I thought it might grab onto the paint better. I did experiment on the other just for informational purposes. From experience, I can say that it doesn’t work as well.
I decided to create a stencil with vinyl and my Silhouette Machine. They have a huge library full of cuteness, and I was able to find exactly what I was looking for. I wanted a design that wasn’t intricate. A bigger design would be easier to use and wouldn’t have as many issues as a smaller, more intricate design would on material like this.
I measured how tall I wanted things to be and then cut out my template. The vinyl didn’t adhere as well as I would have hoped on the material, but I was able to remedy that in the next step.
Once this piece of vinyl was down, I needed to protect the rest of it from overspraying and make sure the stencil stayed down. Using newspaper and painter’s tape, I put newspaper around anyplace I didn’t want painted and used the painter’s tape to adhere the stencil better. I used Krylon 2 in 1 Spray Paint in Orange and Purple for the boots (I sectioned these off separately too in order to get both colors). Once the boots were dry, I cut out another stencil and placed them on the mat, repeating the process of newspaper and taping.
There was still some smudging in areas and a small amount of overspray, especially with the words. I used white spray paint for the words and they didn’t come out as defined as I would have liked.
The solution? A foam brush. I sprayed whatever color of spray paint I needed for touch ups on the foam brush and dabbed it where it needed to go. It worked pretty well. For added definition, I used a Black Fine Point Sharpie Marker. I outlined everything that I felt needed some help, especially on the letters.
In the end, this was the finished product:
